All My Life Single release (2007) |
But I know very well
There’s a long road to hell That’s been paved with Intentions like mine "All My Life" is a single released by Billy Joel in 2007, the first new song with lyrics he had written since 1993's River of Dreams album. Billy wrote the song on the occasion of his second anniversary with his then wife Katie Lee.
It is a light jazz song in the vein of crooner songs such as those by Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett. But while Billy's vocals are solid, the song itself is somewhat tepid. Billy has written much better love songs and "life" songs. Still, it is pleasant enough. Phil Ramone reunited with Billy and produced the recording. It was recorded at Legacy Studios on December 29, 2006 and released exclusively on People's online homepage for Valentine's Day before becoming available in the iTunes Store on February 20, 2007. A mini promotional CD was also released. From Wikipedia: The Japanese-only CD single release of "All My Life' includes three live tracks, "Honesty," "You're My Home," and "Stiletto." All three tracks were recorded in 2006 during a series of 12 sold-out concerts at Madison Square Garden which yielded the 12 Gardens Live album, but were not originally included in that album.

Words and Music by Billy Joel
All my life I’ve searched this whole world through Try as I might To find someone like you Years drifted by But it was always on my mind I didn’t know just how long I’d go Until I ran out of time All my life I’ve hurt the ones who cared One by one No loving heart was spared I’ve been a wild and restless man But still a man who needs a wife That was my dream and now it seems You’ve taken all my life For as long as I could My intentions were good I assumed my affairs Would be fine But I know very well There’s a long road to hell That’s been paved with Intentions like mine All my life I’ve paid for my mistakes After a while The strongest spirit breaks I’ve had heartache and pain That cut me deeper than a knife Ah, but those days are done ’Cause you’re the one I’ve wanted all my life And I know very well There’s a long road to hell That’s been paved with Intentions like mine All my life My stars were surely crossed Now and then I missed the love I lost But all that changed The day you said you’d be my wife Who could have known That finding you would only take me All my life Vertical Divider
